A new planning application has been submitted to Southend Council to bring the iconic Grand Hotel in Leigh back into use.
The application seeks to convert the existing hotel into a mixed-use building comprising a basement wine bar and health club, ground floor restaurants and terrace, and 19 self-contained flats across three floors.

Current operator Abellio has won a contract to run train services on the Southend Victoria to Liverpool Street line until 2025.
Announcing the deal today, the government said that Abellio would invest £1.4bn to provide a fully modernised rail service with British-built carriages providing faster trains, more seats, free Wi-Fi for all users and tough new performance targets.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has again awarded prestigious ‘Green Flag Awards’ to Belfairs, Chalkwell, Priory, Shoebury and Southchurch Parks, ranking them among the best 137 parks and green spaces in the East of England.

Southend's new seafront lagoon, that will ensure visitors can enjoy a swim in the sea even when the tide is out, will officially open later this week.
Over 14,000 cubic tonnes of granite rock mark out the new football pitch sized lagoon, and it is hoped that the new facility will provide another popular destination for our many visitors and residents too.

Southend is set to create an Education Board for the borough, to replace the current Schools Forum.
This would enable the local authority to continue to influence education policy and strategy and play a role in school improvement in the future, alongside schools as partners. The education board would also improve engagement between the council, its schools and academies.
