Three of Southend-on-Sea’s beaches have retained their prestigious Blue Flag, with all seven awarded the ‘Seaside Award’, Keep Britain Tidy have announced this week..
It means that East Beach, Shoebury Common and Thorpe Bay beaches will join 65 others across England in flying a Blue Flag Award this summer.

Just over two years after pulling the route, UK regional carrier Flybe is planning to relaunch its Dublin-to-Southend service in October.
The service will be operated by Stobart Air, which also operates the Aer Lingus Regional franchise.

Plans to extend the entrance to Southend Pier have been submitted and will now go through the planning process.
The planned extension would offer a much more attractive, modern and larger entrance to the pier, helping to attract more visitors to the seafront and the iconic landmark.

Plans to convert a former art gallery into artist studios have been given the go-ahead.
Southend Council planning officers have granted planning consent for the proposals to create 23 accessible studios for artists as well as a community gallery and workshop space at the former Beecroft Gallery in Westcliff.

Plans for a new secondary school in Southend will be discussed by the council’s cabinet next week (Tuesday 14th March).
Detailed planning by the council shows that 4 to 5 new forms of entry will be needed by September 2018, and a further 6 by September 2019.

Southend Council has announced that school improvement funding, which was due to stop at the end of March 2017, will continue for the next two years.
It follows a major rise in the number of children attending a good or outstanding school since the funding started in 2014. The new funding will help to continue the school improvement programme and develop plans to give more local children the opportunity to attend grammar school.

A vacant unit on the centre of Southend’s seafront could be transformed into a café and events venue that will showcase the Borough’s buoyant cultural scene.
Southend Council has submitted a planning application seeking to change the use and refurbish the empty retail unit, known as Unit 21, which was built as part of the Pier Hill lift project but never occupied.
The plans submitted to the Council’s Development Control team provide for café space with a patio, gallery space and kitchen and seating.

Southend Council will receive nearly £20m for the Airport Business Park Southend (ABPS) project.
The news was announced this week by Local Growth Minister, Andrew Percy, who announced a government cash injection of £102 million for capital projects for the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.
Southend Council has secured nearly one-fifth of the entire allocation across the SELEP area, and the funding will allow for a new Innovation Centre to be built on the ABPS site, which is owned by Southend Council, but located within the Rochford District.
