Getting to Southend

Air, road and rail
Whether you are travelling from within the UK or abroad, getting to Southend is easy thanks to its excellent transport connections.
Two direct railway lines link Southend to central London in less than one hour; two major roads link the borough to the M25 motorway and London; and major investment in Southend Airport has opened up direct connections to a host of major European cities and holiday destinations.

RAIL

Two railway lines offer a regular and direct train service between Southend and London in less than one hour.

Abellio Greater Anglia runs trains from London Liverpool Street and Stratford to Southend Victoria, via Southend Airport and Prittlewell. Book tickets in advance to save money with the Raileasy website.

c2c runs trains from London Fenchurch Street to Leigh, Chalkwell,Westcliff, Southend Central, Southend East, Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness. Book tickets in advance to save money with the Raileasy website.

AIR
Major investment by the Stobart Group in recent years has transformed Southend Airport into a leading regional airport that has been voted as the Best in Britain by Which? magazine for the last two years.

Airlines easyJet, Flybe, RyanAir, Aer Lingus and SkyWork operate flights to destinations including Amsterdam, Corfu, Milan, Dubrovnik, Bordeaux, Venice, Malaga, Barcelona, Tenerife, Ibiza, Geneva, Dublin (with connections to the USA), Bern, Faro, Mallorca and others.

Tour operators Thompson and First Choice also operate services from Southend Airport.

A purpose-built railway station is located directly opposite the terminal building, with a two-minute walk between the two. The station connects the airport with Stratford in around 45 minutes and London Liverpool Street in one hour. It is only a few minutes by train from the airport into Southend Victoria station. More details can be found here.

ROAD

Southend is connected to the M25 motorway and London by two major roads - the A127 and the A13.

From the north, Southend is accessible via the A1, M11, M25 (Junction 29 - 20 miles) & A127. From the south, Southend is reached via the M25 (Junction 30 - 26 miles) Dartford Tunnel and A13.

The A127 dual-carriage is generally a quicker route into central Southend than the A13, but during rush hour and peak summer holiday season all roads can become very congested. Watch out for the 50mph average speed cameras along the A127 as you approach Southend.

Southend Council's live traffic cameras provide images from 16 key locations across the borough. You can see the latest pictures here.

There are over 10,000 Council-managed car parking spaces in Southend. Be aware, however, that the seafront and central car parks can be extremely busy during the summer, especially at weekends.

By Coach

National Express operates to/from London Victoria, with the ‘305' service connecting to Southend. The journey time is approximately 2 to 2½ hours.

By Bus

An extensive network of buses operates between Southend-on-Sea's Travel Centre just off the High Street in and around Southend and surrounding towns.
