Plans for a modern new hotel in Victoria Avenue

8/11/2016

Plans have been submitted for a new 62-bedroom hotel in Victoria Avenue, Southend.

Benfleet-based R+R Architects want to build the five-storey hotel, including a restaurant, on land currently being used as a car park for Baryta House.

The architects, in a design statement, said the hotel will “set an architectural precedent within the area through the installation of a contemporary building.”

“The brief for this application is to create a well resolved and complimentary piece of architecture that is well designed and incorporates sustainability and 21st century trends, which in turn will deliver a pleasant environment for visitors, tourists and the local community.”

They added that “the overall layout and arrangement of the building has been dictated by the recognised design guidance provided by a specific hotel chain.” It has not been announced which hotel chain this is.

Parking for hotel guests is not included in the plans, although there will be a new upper-ground level parking deck to provide spaces specifically for Baryta House.

The architects said: “Currently the proposal is not offering associated car parking spaces for the visitors to benefit from as we feel its location offers a good range of sustainable alternative transportation options. A manager parking space and disabled parking space has been provided to improve accessibility. However the car park deck with continue to provide parking on site for Baryta House.”

Victoria Avenue is undergoing a complete transformation, with derelict office blocks – Heath and Carby House, Victoria House and Baryta House – being converted into homes with ground-floor bars and restaurants below them.

The application will be decided by Southend Council in the new year.
